Diamond certificate: why it matters

article image

It’s essential that every jewelry purchase comes with a diamond certificate that documents first and foremost its authenticity, and then its quality and value.

Understanding what a diamond authenticity certificate is and how to read it allows you to make an informed and well-considered choice.

At Fàbera, we use lab-grown diamonds that come with IGI authenticity certification.

We’re always available to answer any questions about the certification of our diamonds.

What’s the difference between a certified and non-certified diamond?

First and foremost—and most importantly—the certificate provides you with the assurance that the diamond is authentic.

The certificate is a document that’s given to you when you purchase the diamond and must be issued by accredited, internationally renowned third parties like GIA or IGI—NEVER handwritten by the jeweler.

Before certifications became widespread, diamonds were assigned names and color grades that weren’t universal in the industry,” explains Queena Chang, GIA-certified gemologist and Diamond Expert. “GIA (Gemological Institute of America) created a universal diamond grading system that’s now used worldwide.

A non-certified diamond may well be of excellent quality, but without third-party verification, you can never be certain about what you’re purchasing.

How important is the certificate when buying a diamond?

When purchasing a diamond, receiving the certificate is fundamental. This is the only way to guarantee your diamond’s quality and ensure that the price you’re paying truly reflects its value.

While certified diamonds aren’t necessarily higher quality than non-certified ones, the certificate is essential for authenticating and protecting the investment you’re making.

Are lab-grown diamonds certified like mined diamonds?

Yes, lab-grown diamonds must be certified just like mined diamonds.

Like their natural counterparts, lab-grown diamonds are graded according to the 4Cs (carat, cut, clarity, color). These characteristics contribute to a diamond’s overall value, and even with lab-grown diamonds, superior qualities command higher prices because perfection remains difficult to achieve.

What’s the best certification for lab-grown diamonds?

The best certification for lab-grown diamonds is provided by the International Gemological Institute (IGI).

IGI certification advantages:

– Internationally recognized standards,
– Advanced analysis technologies,
– Specific expertise in lab-grown diamonds,
– Complete process traceability.

How do you know if a diamond is certified?

All certified diamonds come with a document (provided by third parties like IGI or HRD institutes) containing their diamond grading report (the 4Cs).

If a diamond is delivered to you without this document, it’s most likely not certified.

All Fàbera lab-grown diamonds from 0.30 carats and up come with:

– IGI report with complete 4C grading,
– Unique serial number laser-inscribed on the diamond’s girdle,
– Official paper and digital documentation from the certifying institute.

How do you verify that a diamond matches its certificate?

Every diamond has a unique number inscribed inside the diamond’s girdle. This is a microscopic inscription that can be identified with a microscope by a jeweler or gemologist. The same code appears on the diamond’s certificate.

Do I receive a certificate when I purchase Fàbera Jewelry?

At Fàbera, we provide IGI authenticity certification for all our lab-grown diamonds from 0.30 carats and up.

For smaller carats, the certificate cost may exceed the diamond’s cost, so we provide it only when requested by the customer. The price of the certified diamond doesn’t include any markup. We cut out all supply chain intermediaries and source directly from certified companies with sustainable diamond production practices.

This allows us to offer IGI-authenticated, high-quality lab-grown diamonds at competitive prices.

What essential information should the certificate contain?

Not all certificates look alike—they may differ in some elements. However, they all contain the most important information: the diamond’s classification based on the 4Cs.

Carat

This characteristic identifies the diamond’s weight.

Color

Diamond color is evaluated on a scale from D to Z, where D is the highest grade and corresponds to colorlessness.

Clarity (Purezza)

Diamond clarity is also evaluated on a scale from F (Flawless) to I and refers to a diamond’s visual purity—meaning the absence of inclusions.

Cut (taglio)

The cut and quality of the diamond refer to the arrangement of a diamond’s facets.

You’ll typically also find information about the certificate number, diamond shape (round brilliant, emerald, pear, marquise, etc.), the diamond’s country of origin, the date the diamond certificate was issued, and the diamond’s measurements.
