Diamond certificate: why it matters

article image

It’s essential that every jewelry purchase comes with a diamond certificate that documents first and foremost its authenticity, and then its quality and value.

Understanding what a diamond authenticity certificate is and how to read it allows you to make an informed and well-considered choice.

At Fàbera, we use lab-grown diamonds that come with IGI authenticity certification.

We’re always available to answer any questions about the certification of our diamonds.

What’s the Difference Between a Certified Diamond and a Non-Certified Diamond?

The difference is simple — but essential: a certificate gives you certainty.

A diamond certificate provides official proof that the diamond is authentic and that its quality has been independently verified.

A diamond grading certificate is a document issued by an accredited third-party institution such as IGI or GIA. It should never be handwritten or created by the jeweller.

Before certification became widespread, diamond quality was often described using terms that were not universal across the industry.

As Queena Chang, a GIA-certified gemmologist and diamond expert, explains:

“Before diamond certifications were widely used, diamonds were assigned names and colour grades that were not universal. GIA created a global diamond grading system that is now used worldwide.”

A non-certified diamond may still be beautiful and high quality — but without independent verification, you can never be fully certain of what you are purchasing.

Why Is a Diamond Certificate Important?

When buying a diamond, receiving a certificate is fundamental.

It is the only way to:

  • guarantee the diamond’s true quality

  • ensure the price reflects its real value

  • protect your investment

Certified diamonds are not necessarily “better” than non-certified ones, but certification is essential for authenticity and transparency.

Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Certified Like Mined Diamonds?

Yes — lab-grown diamonds should be certified in exactly the same way as natural diamonds.

Just like mined diamonds, lab-grown diamonds are graded according to the 4Cs:

  • Carat (weight)

  • Cut (quality of the cut)

  • Clarity (purity)

  • Color (colour grade)

These characteristics determine the overall value of a diamond, whether lab-grown or natural.

What Is the Best Certification for Lab-Grown Diamonds?

The most widely recognised certification for lab-grown diamonds is issued by the International Gemological Institute (IGI).

Benefits of IGI Certification:

  • internationally recognised standards

  • advanced analytical technology

  • specialised expertise in lab-grown diamonds

  • full traceability of the process

How Can You Tell If a Diamond Is Certified?

All certified diamonds come with an official grading report issued by third-party institutes such as IGI or HRD.

If a diamond is delivered without this document, it is most likely not certified.
